HERALD STAFF
This Thursday visitors from across our province, Canada and the world will meet up in Batoche
to celebrate Métis culture. Back to Batoche a festival that commemorates Métis culture, traditions and heritage will begin this year on Thursday, July 21, and will continue until Sunday, July 24.
“For me there is no other event that brings to me this kind of satisfaction,” said Claire Bélanger- Parker, event manager for Back to Batoche Days 2011. Because this is
a family event, there is no drugs, no alcohol and you are surrounded by
very happy people who just want to have a good time.”
This year the festival will feature a variety of Métis artists as headlin- ers for the main stage including Prince Albert’s own Donny Parenteau who has been attending the
festival as a performer since 2004. “I love going back, love going back,” said Parenteau. “Because it is a very responsive crowd that loves what ever you play. And they
love fiddle music and they love to get up and dance. It is just a really good time, it’s fun with a really good energy.”
This year on Friday, July 22, Parenteau will also take part in and assist visitors in attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest spoons ensemble. At 7:30 p.m. each guest will be handed a wooden spoon and once a total of 1201 or more participants is counted, (which is needed to break the record) Parenteau and his band will lead the rhythm for those 1201 spoon players. “Once they give me the go ahead I will get up and play a fiddle tune and they will play with me and keep the rhythm with me, with the spoons,” said Parenteau. “So it’s kind of cool, and hopefully that happens because I have never broken a world record before.”

This will be year 41 for the Back to Batoche festival that has served as a time and place where visitors can pay homage to Saskatchewan’s national heroes such as Louis Riel
and Gabriel Dumont. And this year like every year the festival will provide a variety of entertainment ranging from live music, jigging, fiddle and square dancing competitions, chuck wagon races and more. Costs to get into this four day event are $50 for adults $35 for youth and seniors and free for youth 12 and under. To find more information on the festival, its events, and to get directions go to www.backtobatoche.org.
This year Back to Batoche, a festival that celebrates Métis culture, traditions and heritage, will begin this Thursday and go until Sunday. And once again Donny Parenteau, a country performer and fiddler from Prince Albert, will be one of the many artists who will perform during the festivities at the main stage
Parenteau takes home two awards at SCMA

After a list of nomination that was ripe for the picking, only one Prince Albert artist walked away with awards from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association.
Prince Albert’s Donny Parenteau took home two, the All Star Band Speciality and Aboriginal Artist of the Year.
When the nominations were released, Larry Krause, then Prince Albert Country Music Association (PACMA) president, was very confident.
“Prince Albert itself has a strong representation when comes time for nominations for the SCMA awards and also for winning awards as well,” Krause told paNOW at the time of nominations.
Krause was up for five awards this year. Parenteau’s name was on 11 nominations.
Other PACMA members nominated were Rich McFarlane, Dave Sinclair, CKBI’s Ken Landers and Don Mitchell, Gail Krause and Dean Bernier.
The big winner of the weekend was Archerwill’s Codie Prevost. He and his band took home six awards, including Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
The awards were held Sunday night in Swift Current.

Donny Parenteau continues to make a big impression on the Canadian country scene, this month coming out with his fourth album To Whom it May Concern. For this one he teamed up with 306 Records/EMI to get his music out to even more people than before.
Parenteau is excited about possibilities for him through the partnership. “It’s absolutely fantastic, it’s great to have an opportunity to get your product out there into stores and just keep on touring and getting out there and doing it,” he said. This particular album is special for Parenteau because he worked with two country idols, Marty Stuart and Charlie Daniels.
“An independent artist in Canada, from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to get two living legends to play on your project is pretty cool,” Parenteau said. Despite the success he has had both touring with Neil McCoy and in his solo career Parenteau has not turned away from his roots.
He was born in Prince Albert, grew up on twelfth street west and he is now raising his family here in the city. “I was always from Prince Albert and always will be … this is my home.”
As well as being a musician Donny Parenteau has done speaking tours in Saskatchewan elementary schools. He encourages the kids he talks with to dream big and to not let things get in the way of those dreams using his own journey to success as an example. “I want to spread the message to the young students out there that (they) can achieve and do anything (they) wanna do.”
The second single from the album, My Girl, written for his daughter Natasha is already on rotation on CMT Canada.
The new album To Whom it May Concern is being released on Jan. 25.
